ENGLAND’S ROYALLY IMPORTANT YEAR--Jubilee celebrations scheduled over coming months



As details of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant – one of the largest public events ever held in London – are today announced, VisitEngland looks at other Jubilee celebrations scheduled across the country


Marking 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in England from June 2 – 5, 2012. Officially unveiled this morning, the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant on Sunday, June 3 will see a procession of 1,000 boats travel down the River Thames, from Battersea to Tower Bridge, flanking the Royal Barge which will transport the Queen.

How to Build a Dinosaur author to speak Feb. 6 during Darwin Days at UGA


World-renowned paleontologist Jack Horner, author ofHow to Build a Dinosaur, will discuss how he and his colleagues are developing the technology to create a real dinosaur at a lecture that is part of the annual Darwin Days celebration at the University of Georgia.
Horner, who advised Steven Spielberg on Jurassic Parkand is Regents Professor of Paleontology at Montana State University, will speak Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. in room 102 of the Miller Learning Center. His lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception in which copies of

J.B. LENOIR AND MONTICELLO RECOGNIZED WITH MISSISSIPPI BLUES TRAIL MARKER


On Saturday, November 5, 2011, J.B. Lenoir received a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail.

Monticello area native J. B. Lenoir (1929-1967) was best known during his lifetime for his 1955 hit “Mama, Talk to Your Daughter,” but he also played an important role in blues history because of his political engagement. In the 1960s, Lenoir recorded a body of topical songs in Chicago that addressed discrimination, the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War. Lenoir’s cousin, Byther Smith from Monticello, also became a Chicago blues recording artist, noted for his cutting-edge lyrics.

Peabody Awards pay respects to radio giant Norman Corwin


  On Oct. 19, board members and staff of the University of Georgia George Foster Peabody Awards joined the electronic media industry and millions of admiring listeners in mourning the passing of Norman Corwin the “poet laureate of radio,” a towering figure of its golden age. His 1941 program,We Hold These Truths, was the first drama to win a Peabody.
Corwin was asked to write and produce the drama as a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Bill of Rights by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The $103 million Rio Tinto Center, funded by a public and private partnership, is deeply rooted in place and infused with multiple features that embrace both traditional and new media techniques – a new Museum that sets a new standard for a Natural History Museum of the 21st Century.
