How to Build a Dinosaur author to speak Feb. 6 during Darwin Days at UGA


World-renowned paleontologist Jack Horner, author ofHow to Build a Dinosaur, will discuss how he and his colleagues are developing the technology to create a real dinosaur at a lecture that is part of the annual Darwin Days celebration at the University of Georgia.
Horner, who advised Steven Spielberg on Jurassic Parkand is Regents Professor of Paleontology at Montana State University, will speak Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. in room 102 of the Miller Learning Center. His lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception in which copies of

This spring, the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) in partnership with the Portfolio Center, presents an exhibition honoring history and design through the medium of the chair.

Stories in Form: Chair Design by the Portfolio Centerruns February 5 through June 3, 2012.
 
The works featured inStories in Formare created as part of the Portfolio Center’s nationally acclaimed course “Modernism: History, Criticism and Theory,” which explores design history as a catalyst for new design ideas. While learning about Modernism, the history of design and the development of critical thinking skills, students in the course create chairs by means of a design process that combines inspiration from a historical period with personal experience.

In recognition of their talent and passion for art and education, high school art teachers from throughout Georgia are invited to submit their personal work for consideration in this annual exhibition at The Janet S. Day Gallery at The Art Institute of Atlanta. The selected works, which may be any form of fine or applied arts including painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, digital media, photography, video/film, design, illustration, ceramics, fiber arts, jewelry and other crafts.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani to Speak at Georgia Southern University



Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will speak at Georgia Southern University’s Hanner Fieldhouse on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

During Giuliani’s term as mayor of New York, he was credited with the economic turnaround and revitalization of the city. Giuliani’s leadership in the months following the September 11th attacks led him to be dubbed “America’s Mayor” and named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year.” Giuliani also received a knighthood from Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II for his efforts.

The Schooner Tara to Make A Call In Savannah - January 20-26, 2012 -

The research schooner Tara, which provides samples and data to the scientific community worldwide to learn more about the impact of climate change on ecosystems, will make a port call in Savannah on January 20-26, 2012.This call is part of an ambitious project entitledTara Oceans.
 
Tara Oceansis the very first attempt to make a global study of marine plankton.Marine plankton is the only ecosystem that is almost continuous over the surface of the Earth. Recently, scientists have discovered the great importance of plankton for the climate: populations of plankton are affected very rapidly by variations in climate.

Annie Sloan -  British decorative paint expert, author of numerous paint technique books, and creator of the one and only Annie SloanChalk Paint – will be holding a one-day workshop in Atlanta, GA, on Thursday, March 29 at theWyndham Peachtree Conference Center, as part of her 8-city tour of America.   Ms. Sloan, who is considered a ‘rock star’ by her numerous US fans - will be leading the one-day demonstration and overseeing hands-on group sessions.

The 4 annual Decatur Old House fair is coming on February 18 at the newly renovated Courtyard Marriott and Conference Center and we’ve mixed things up because like your historic house, the fair is a work in progress!

Terrace on Peachtree Names Winner for Holiday Design Competition


The Ellis Hotel’s Farm to Table Restaurant Selects SCAD Senior to Decorate for the Holidays

Downtown Atlanta’s eco-friendly boutique hotel, The Ellis, proudly announces Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Senior, Monet Masters, the winner of their holiday décor design competition for the hotel’s restaurant, Terrace on Peachtree. Masters will be installing the decorations on Friday, December 2, and will be up until January 1, 2012.
The competition, a “design on a dime” challenge, began on October 25th, was open to all SCAD students, who were asked to design holiday decorations for Terrace on Peachtree within a $500 budget.
