Almost immediately upon his arrival in Havana, American photographerMichael Dweckbecame a witness to a side of Cuban society that hasn’t welcomed
witnesses – much less Americans or photographers – since the revolution.
With the aid of luck, charm and a translator, he landed in the midst of
afarandula– a close-knit group of well-connected artists –
that seemingly merged the artistic integrity of the 30’s-era Parisian
salons with the glamour and star-power of the 70’s-era Studio 54.
Through his unprecedented (and unrestricted) access to this hidden
society of artists, writers, film makers, musicians and models, he was
able to assemble a photographic narrative of a seductive and privileged
world unseen by the West. |

New Gay Tour Operator Caters to Evolving LGBT Segment In 1986, the first all-gay cruise set sail out of New Orleans with
750 guests thanks to Kevin Mossier, founder of RSVP Vacations. Because
of the social climate of the time, during the height of the AIDS
epidemic and socialized homophobia, Mossier saw a need to create a safe
place for gays and lesbians to vacation. According
to Charlie Rounds, who was one of Minneapolis-based RSVP’s early
employees and later became part owner, the gay and lesbian travel market
has evolved significantly since the 1980s. |

Secret Service
Pioneer Sees The Beginnings Of A Bigotry
BacklashIn Alabama, fields of tomatoes are ripening – with almost no
workers to pick them.
In that state’s classrooms, teachers face rows of
empty desks. Many of their students suddenly disappeared, having fled with their
families.
After the U.S. Supreme Court upheld much of Alabama’s tough new
law governing undocumented immigrants on Sept. 28, many workers – mostly
Mexicans – quickly packed up and left in fear. Some of them, according to
press reports, gave up their homes and jobs even though they were working here
legally. |
