Blue MedSpa: Forging A New Tradition
by Julie Herron Carson

Most people would agree that they want to look and feel their best. Although that goal sounds simple, there are many elements that must come together for optimum health, wellness and appearance. John Stupka, president of Blue MedSpa, understands that inner health and outer beauty are inextricably joined together. The Miami native is the creative force behind Atlanta’s newest and most innovative medical spa, which combines the traditional spa experience with results-focused anti-aging and non-invasive cosmetic treatments.

Blue MedSpa opened in Midtown Atlanta in late September 2005 and already has a lengthy roster of clients eager to experience its individually-customized spa protocols. Services range from hair, skin, nails and makeup to massage, cellulite reduction, laser and facial injectables. Each individual treatment or combination of services is custom-designed for the client to best meet his or her needs and expectations.

Stupka has an extensive background in marketing and medical sales to cosmetic surgeons, dermatologists and spas. During his sales career, he became interested in the combination of traditional spa and innovative medical treatments to help adults look and feel younger. He has spent the past several years refining his vision for Blue MedSpa as a place where he and his staff can make a positive difference in the lives of their guests and the community.

“My hope is to help each guest achieve a greater sense of wellness and balance,” says Stupka. “We don’t just provide a one-day experience – we work to create a lifestyle plan for optimum health. With both spa and medical services in one place, we simplify the process for our clients and are able to create a multi-talented team to achieve the desired results. One of several unique aspects of Blue MedSpa is our non-gratuity policy. We are one of the only spas in the country where clients do not tip the staff,” he says.

Blue MedSpa’s staff is impressive and well-credentialed. Dr. Amy Simon, medical director of the spa, is a board certified and double-fellowship trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Hair and makeup artist Richie Arpino, well-known to Atlanta’s stylish set, is artistic director for hair and makeup. Blue MedSpa clinical director, Jill Jones, was the first registered nurse in the country to be asked by Allergen, maker of Botox, to implement a national training program for physicians, nurse practitioners and registered nurses.

Stupka’s attention to detail and concern for clients is apparent from the moment a visitor steps past the Spa’s cascading water feature and through the front door. The lobby is bright and inviting, with a blue and white color scheme and hair and skincare products attractively displayed. At the rear, there is a “facial bar” where clients can sample products, receive a relaxing hand massage and learn more about the Spa’s facilities and services.

“I wanted to create a stylish, modern décor, with a sleek, big-city feel, but also comfortable and inviting,” says Stupka. “The name was inspired by a photo I have of my mother and sister standing in front of the Canadian glacier fields. The ice behind them has a beautiful, iridescent blue tone that is clean, cool and calming. I thought – that’s the feeling I want for the medical spa – and the name was born.”

After changing into a soft robe and slippers, clients meet with their therapists to discuss the suggested spa treatments. If several services are scheduled, each therapist will meet with the client at the beginning of the appointment, so there are no interruptions once the spa treatment begins. Patrons receive their services in one room, again, to reduce any interruptions in service and relaxation.

Blue MedSpa has facilities and treatment rooms for patients with physical disabilities and even a private entrance for surgical clients. The staff has created special services for clients undergoing cancer treatments, as well as pre-and post-operative patients. They also offer a signature line of products that are customized for each individual.

“I created Blue MedSpa with several core values in mind,” says Stupka. First, we honor each other and our guests. We focus on excellence, innovation and integrity. Each staff member goes through a month-long training process and is well-versed in all of our services so that they can truly work as a team for the benefit of our clients. Even the one-time, out-of-town visitor or someone splurging on a visit to a spa will benefit from our level of service. And, for guests in a hurry, we offer “express services” for hair care, makeup and manicures and pedicures,” he says.

One of the signature clinical services is the Triactive Cellulite procedure. Using a unique piece of equipment, the technician performs a non-invasive treatment for the reduction and appearance of cellulite, as well as toning and tightening of the face and body. The service is an exclusive offering of Blue MedSpa.
