Be Someone
Orrin Hudson knows a secret. It is priceless, but due to his beliefs, he can not bare to hold it in. He must share the wealth. As founder of Be Someone, a program to motivate and educate kids in the game of life, he uses chess as a metaphor and to emphasize the power of words and learning. Our youth may only be a percentage of the population, but theyre 100% of our future, states Hudson. His philosophy encompasses, among other ideals, a counter intuitive law of measurement, the more you give to others the more comes back to you.
An Alabama state trooper for 6 years, Hudson is no stranger to tragedy. He has witnessed some of humanitys darker moments. And while he was far from wealthy growing up, after owning a car dealership for 10 years, he became a self made man. But that is not the success story. His life changed after attending a Tony Robins seminar, in which the question was posed, if you had just 6 months to live, what would you do with your life? Hudson decided to make his life really count from that moment on, not only to himself but to many others.
The organization, Be Someone gets its name from some well-spoken words aimed at Abe Lincoln when his life was not going too well. They came out of his mothers mouth and Abe obviously took them to heart. The phrase is not a reference to being someone who is important, but to being someone to others. Being someone who helps, who gives, who motivates, who takes the time with others is the measure of true success. Hudson works in the schools and communities, with students that may have been identified by teachers as children at risk. Hudson has his kids learn 25 new vocabulary words a day because he says simply, words are powerful. They are in fact, so powerful, that they can create the reality in which we find ourselves. Words stir us into action and have been known to give birth to nations, laws and religions. People use them to commit their lives to each other in marriage and later, to call the children theyve created inside for dinner. Learning and being the best that you can possibly be at all times is one cornerstone of Hudsons beliefs. Your best is always different, it is always changing the more you learn, says Hudson. In turn, he strives to make his kids thirsty for this kind of power that knowledge brings. By facilitating education and influencing the minds of tomorrow in a positive way, the whole world gains from it. Call it karma, call it good will; but what you reap, you sow, and what goes around comes around. Hudson stresses to youth that the ground is neutral, saying, It doesnt care what you plant, corn or nightshade. What you put out there is what youll get back. Chess is also an instrument that he uses to teach kids life skills such as thinking, planning, focusing, patience and self- confidence.
Be Someone teaches children to take responsibility for their lives and to see the interconnectedness of all life. This world view teaches youth that they are the ones who will step up to the plate and make changes in their world. It is a proactive approach that requires self- respect and motivation, and the underlying belief that they not only can be someone, but they already are.
Attitude is the key to living a life full of promises realized, continues Hudson. Focusing on the positive will bring more positive things into your life. Count your blessings and they will multiply before you have gotten to the last one.
Hudson counts his every day. His main inspirations have been his Christian background, Tony Robins, and his best fan and supporter, Jane Fonda. I just thank God for Jane Fonda, he states with an astonished look on his face. She has just given me a lot. Not only has Jane Fonda contributed monetary funds to the organization, but she has given an even more finite, and therefore more valuable part of her self, her time. Founder of Georgias Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, Fonda is known to be a thoughtful and generous supporter of Georgias youth in her own right.
Orrin Hudson is out to infest Georgias youth. He is perched and ready to put all kinds of infectious ideas in their heads. Positive ideas of confidence and self-worth, just brimming over the edge until they spill onto others and are moved to action. He wants them to take charge of their lives and give them the drive to achieve all kinds of their best work. However, this is not just for their own good but for the good of mankind. He wants this infectious goodness, this teeming feeling of hope and love to be spread throughout the youth like a glorious affliction of good will, guaranteeing that the future is bright and full of promise.
